Platform limits

Character Counter shows exactly how many characters your text contains, with and without spaces, and updates as you type. It's the quickest way to make sure a tweet, an SEO title, a meta description, an SMS or a bio fits its platform's limit before you publish.

A limits table shows how many characters you have left for common platforms, turning red when you go over. Emoji and accented letters are counted as single characters, the way people see them.

How to use the Character Counter tool

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Read the live character, word and line counts.
  3. Check the platform table to see what fits.
  4. Edit until every limit you care about shows a positive number.

Features

  • Live counts with and without spaces.
  • Word and line counts.
  • Built-in limits for SEO titles, meta descriptions, X/Twitter, SMS, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Counts emoji as single characters.
  • Private: nothing leaves your browser.

Tips for best results

Search engines usually show around 50–60 characters of a title and 150–160 characters of a meta description. Keep the important words near the start. Note that some platforms count certain characters differently: for example, X counts links as 23 characters, and an SMS containing non-Latin characters is limited to 70 characters.

Character limits are everywhere online: titles and descriptions in search results, social media posts, ad headlines, app store descriptions, form fields and text messages. Going over the limit means your text gets cut off with an ellipsis, often right where the key message was. Checking the length before you publish keeps your text complete and readable.

Compatibility and limits

The Character Counter tool works in every modern browser on desktop and mobile and handles very long texts, even entire books, without slowing down. It understands Unicode, so it works with English as well as Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, emoji and accented letters. Because nothing is sent over the network, results appear instantly as you type or click.

Privacy: your files never leave your device

Everything you type or paste is processed instantly in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, logged or stored, so it's safe to use with drafts, private notes and confidential documents.
